Lakeside Merry-Go-Round, Experimenting with a New Style

News, Panoramic Artwork, January 28th, 2011

It looks like an illustration, but it’s really a photograph…

I’m trying something new this time.

I’ve always stuck to traditional photography, but I’ve been playing with an image of the merry-go-round that I took at Lakeside amusement park that wasn’t working as a straight photo for me.  I managed to create a unique “illustrated poster” look, which I think goes well with the image.

I’m really liking this effect and will probably play with it more in my other images.  It has a playful, “cell animation” look, but backed by a realistic play of light and shadow and proportion.  I also really like how the foreground has more detail, while the background is more simplistic, a natural product of the filter process.  I’d like to se this pieces printed on canvas.  I think it is one of the only pieces I have so far that would look good on that medium.

I also made another version that has more detail (below).  I think it looks much better up close, and I intend to have it printed out very large scale.  Take a look at the detail insert to see what I mean.

Which version do you like more?  What do you think of this style?  Please give me your feedback in the comments.  Thanks!

I like the second, more detailed one more. Would look great as a large poster!
